UCLUELET

The locals call it “Ukee” but the town “Ucluelet” is a Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation word meaning 'safe harbour'. The Nuu-chah-nulth have stories and legends that go back more than 4000 years.

More about Ucluelet

were the main economic drivers in the past. Europeans discovered Barkley Soundin the 1770s, in pursuit of whales and seals and the Gold Rush around 1900 near Florencia Bay brought settlers to the area but eventually commercial gold mining proved impractical. During the “Rush” minors, foresters and Japanese fishermen all found their way to the coast. By the 20th century the fishing industry boomed and more people settled in Ucluelet. The predominant species were salmon, halibut, cod, and herring. As a result of the increasing catch, canneries, fish buying stations, reduction plants, and processing facilities were added to the area's infrastructure.

            Ucluelet Harbour

Today, commercial fishing in Ucluelet has ebbed. However, sport fishing is booming and some of the biggest Chinook Salmon on the coast are caught off the shores of Ucluelet. By the 1950’s, the forest industry was predominant and for the next 40 years forestry provided Ucluelet with what seemed to be a reliable and relatively prosperous income. But, like fishing forestry had its ups and downs and only small forestry operations remain.

The gradual establishment of road access to and from the Ucluelet area greatly influenced the community's development. During World War II a road was built connecting Ucluelet with Tofino principally to provide access to the military airport near Long Beach. This airport is still in service providing 3-5200 ft runways used year round. Over 4 million dollars of airport improvements are underway in 2012. In 1959 the road to Port Alberni opened but was not paved until 1972. Since then people have arrived at a steady pace.

Tourism is growing and new resorts like the Black Rock Resort have added to the economy of the area. Visitors enjoy miles of sandy beaches in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. From sport fishing to luxury spa treatments, whale watching and first class restaurants, Ucluelet is proving to be a a diamond in the rough.
