TOFINO

The seaside community of Tofino is located on the northern end of the Esowista Peninsula, about 30 minutes away from Ucluelet. It is within Clayoquot Sound and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Clayoquot is taken from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations word loosely meaning “people who are different from who they used to be”. Today Tofino is known as the “Surf Capital of Canada” home to some of the best competitive surfers in the world.

More About Tofino

Europeans first made contact with the Nuu-chah-nulth in the 1700’s. During an expedition in 1792, Captains Galiano and Valdes named the southern inlet of Clayoquot Sound Tofino Inlet. The name was in honour of Vincente Tofino, Galiano’s cartographer. The current townsite of Tofino was established in 1909 about 50 years after the original fur trading post. The marine heritage is rich in Clayoquot Sound and efforts are ongoing to collect and maintain marine artifacts; many from shipwrecks on the ocean floor.

Like Ucluelet, fishing, forestry, and mining were the main economic drivers in the past. However today, tourism including whale-watching, sport fishing, eco tours and world-class bird watching, is the mainstay of the economy.

The gradual establishment of road access to the Tofino area greatly influenced the community's development. During World War II a road was built connecting Tofino with Ucluelet principally to provide access to the military airport near Long Beach. This airport is still in service providing three 5200 ft runways used year round. Over 4 million dollars of airport improvements are underway in 2012. In 1959 the road to Port Alberni opened but was not paved until 1972. Since then people have arrived at a steady pace.

Tourism is growing and, with first class hotels like the luxurious Wickaninnish Inn leading the way, other fine resorts, luxury condos and restaurants have added the economy of the area. Visitors enjoy miles of sandy beaches in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve but also within the boundary of the Municipality.  On these sandy beaches you will find luxurious properties facing west with the open Pacific Ocean’s as their front yard. Rocky headlands offer luxury homes a high perch above the surf and outcroppings for migrating whales a place to "rub".

Locals may call it “Tough City” but there is nothing tough about enjoying the area recreation, walking the miles of sandy shore, enjoying one of the many luxurious spas and ending the day dining in one of the many first class restaurants.
